A project can start with an idea, an industrial design concept or a technical problem. We can also improve an existing product or join your ongoing development project.

We can take on a single design task or a broader role, from concept development through to production support.

Bringing design and engineering together

Ideas deserve a chance. We explore structures and ways of making the product that preserve the essence of the concept through to production wherever possible.

Industrial design can come from your own team or design agency. We can also arrange it through MH, working with experienced industrial design partners.

For an electronic product, we may define the space available for the circuit board and coordinate the enclosure, components and connectors. Electronics design can be provided by your own team or by our partners as part of the project. We work with the electronics engineer to develop the mechanical design and its interfaces.

Prototypes help us ask the right questions

We use our own prototyping capabilities as part of the design process. A prototype can help us assess structures, ergonomics, the fit between parts or how a mechanism works.

Testing can run through several rounds of development. A finding leads to a change, a revised design and, when needed, another test.

Depending on the product, testing may cover temperature, drops, vibration or electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Tests are planned as part of the project, and laboratory testing can take place at an external test laboratory.

Manufacturing is part of the design process

Materials, manufacturing methods, tolerances and assembly shape the design from the start. Our work can include:

• Designing injection-moulded plastic parts and sheet metal structures.
• Refining manufacturability with the manufacturer through design for manufacturing (DFM) reviews.
• Preparing production documentation and inspecting the first manufactured parts.
• Updating the production design and providing technical support as production starts.

Pre-compliance testing can reveal problems before the design is finalised. The timing depends on the project: tests may take place before tooling is ordered or alongside manufacturing.

When needed, we also help identify suitable manufacturing methods and manufacturers.

The right tools for the project

Our main CAD tools are PTC Creo and SolidWorks. We agree which tools to use as part of the project’s working arrangements.
